Summary Merlin orders his girlfriend Morgana the best gift, only it won’t arrive in time for Christmas, so he goes out to find another present.
Merlin logged into his computer to check the delivery company’s site for the tenth time that day, and it was only noon. But it was also the twenty-second of December and his gift for his girlfriend, Morgana, still hadn’t arrived.
He’d shopped all over the internet, looking for the perfect gift that would say “I love you” to Morgana. And since she came from a rich family and had everything she wanted, this was no easy feat. He’d finally found the perfect gift on an obscure-looking website offering unique jewelry. It was a miniature rosebud pendant that had been dipped in 24-carat gold. He’d paired it with the most delicate-looking gold chain. Morgana’s favorite flower was the rose and he was sure she’d love it.
The company had promised delivery by Christmas, since he had paid the expedited shipping fee, but so far the delivery website just said, “In transit.” Frustrated, he closed the browser window and returned to work.
oooooo
December twenty-third. The last day of shipping before Christmas, and the website still said “in transit.” He was scheduled for dinner at Morgana’s father’s mansion on Christmas Eve. They’d exchange and open gifts there, and Merlin was afraid he’d have nothing to offer.
He picked up his phone to call the shipping company. A few minutes later and he was still waiting to the tune of scratchy Christmas music. He waited and waited, finally turning to his computer to play a round of solitaire.
Several rounds and an hour later, he was still on the phone. Every once in a while, a cheery voice would come on the line to explain how important his call was to the company. He was just listening to the voice again, when he heard a click followed by a dial tone. He looked at his phone to discover the call had indeed ended. Frustrated, he sat his phone down on the desk and sighed.
Seeing no other choice, he picked up his keys, intending to head for the mall and the slim pickings they had there. He got in his car and headed out, resolving to buy the first nice thing that caught his eye.
Once at the mall, he headed to one of the big department stores anchored there. He walked in to find people walking to and fro at a rapid pace. Displays were in disarray. He ran a hand through his hair. What on earth was he going to find here? It was a mess.
He headed over to a display of scarves. Morgana liked scarves and maybe if they had one in her favorite color, he could get that. But there were none in any color Morgana liked. In fact, they were all hideous colors and patterns, which was probably why they remained. He gave up on the scarves and headed further into the store, hoping inspiration would strike.
All he could find were the makeup and perfume counters, and while he knew Morgana liked both, he knew she would also hate it if he bought her something in the wrong color or scent. So he decided to head into the mall proper, to see if there was a smaller store that had things she liked.
Merlin went from store to store, growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of products and customer service, not to mention the plethora of crazy shoppers. Finally, after he’d gone through most of the mall, he found a women’s clothing store with scarves, and to his delight, he found one in one of her favorite colors. Snatching it up, he walked to the register to check out. He counted himself lucky that he had the perfect-sized box and wrapping paper at home. It would be a breeze from here on out. But he couldn’t fight the disappointment that his original gift hadn’t made it in time for Christmas. That company was going to hear from him . . . eventually.
oooooo
Finally it was the evening of Christmas Eve. Merlin drove to the Pendragon’s mansion and parked inside the gate. This morning he’d wrapped Morgana’s present neatly and prayed she’d like it anyway.
He rang the bell at the front doors and waited for the butler to open them. Instead, it was Morgana at the door. She flung her arms around Merlin and brought his head down for a searing kiss. When they broke, she shut the door and took his hand. “Thank goodness you’re here. You’ve got to save me from Arthur and father’s arguing.”
“I’ll do what I can, but no promises,” he replied. Arthur and Uther’s arguments were legendary.
They entered the formal dining room and Merlin gaped. He’d been here before, but not at the holidays. The place looked like an army of professional designers had been let loose, and, as he thought about it for a moment, they probably had. Arthur and Uther were laughing and joking in the corner. He glance at Morgana, who grinned. “I guess they resolved it.”
Arthur and Uther greeted Merlin and they all sat down to eat. Course after course came and Merlin ate until he felt stuffed. After dessert, Uther suggested they repair to the formal dining room, where they could have coffee and open their presents. Butterflies fluttered in Merlin’s stomach; he hoped Morgana would like his present even though it isn’t what he originally wanted to give her.
The formal living room looked like the same decorators had been at work here. The tree was at least ten feet tall. Morgana pulled him over to a loveseat facing the tree. Uther and Arthur sat in armchairs flanking them. “Guest first,” Uther said.
Morgana got up and picked up one of the packages from under the tree. She walked back to Merlin with it and handed it to him. Merlin looked at the package then, after a nod from Morgana, began unwrapping the small box. Inside was a leather wallet, which probably cost more than Merlin made in a month. “Thank you,” he said, giving her a small kiss.
Arthur unwrapped a package from Morgana next, then it was Morgana’s turn. She gestured at Merlin for him to hand over her present, and he did. She tore into the wrapping and uncovered the box. She opened it to reveal the deep-purple scarf. “Oh,” she said.
“I can explain,” Merlin started. “I ordered you the best gift ever, but it hasn’t been delivered yet. I swear I didn’t get you only this crappy present.”
Morgana turned to him. “I never said it was crappy.” She cradled his face in her hands. “It’s beautiful, I love it. Thank you.” She kissed him then, long and deep. They broke apart when Arthur wolf-whistled at them.
The rest of the presents were unwrapped and they enjoyed coffee in front of the roaring fire in the living room. Soon the evening was over and Merlin was leaving. Morgana walked him to the door and took his hands in hers. “Thank you again for the beautiful scarf. Every time I wear it, I’ll think of you.”
“I’m glad you like it.”
“Of course. Anything you could buy for me, I’d love.” She leaned into him for a kiss and he obliged willingly. A few minutes later, he said goodnight and left to go back home.
oooooo
Merlin woke up on the morning of December twenty-sixth and walked to his front door to retrieve the morning paper. He saw a box sitting next to the paper with the jewelry company’s return address. He whooped and went back inside.
Heading back to his bedroom, he picked up his phone and dialed Morgana. Once she picked up, he said, “Hey Morgana, guess what? Your real gift is here.”
